Spinal Cord Injuries
Spinal Cord Injuries
Spinal cord injuries (SCIs) are traumatic events that can have profound and life-altering consequences for those affected. The spinal cord, a vital component of the central nervous system, extends from the brainstem to the lower back, transmitting signals between the brain and the rest of the body. When the spinal cord is injured, these signals can be disrupted, leading to a wide range of impairments depending on the severity and location of the injury.
SCIs can occur through various mechanisms, most commonly through trauma such as motor vehicle accidents, falls, sports injuries, and acts of violence. The impact of an SCI can be devastating, not only physically but also emotionally and socially, as individuals may face significant challenges in mobility, sensation, and bodily function. The extent of impairment can vary widely: some individuals may experience partial loss of function, while others may be completely paralyzed below the level of injury.
